As the vibrant month of June rolls around, communities across the globe come together to celebrate Pride Month, honoring the progress and resilience of the LGBTQ+ community. Among these festivities, one event has emerged as a beloved tradition in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania: the Pride Pub Crawl. As we prepare for the 2nd annual Jim Thorpe Pride Pub Crawl on Friday, June 21st, 2024, it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the history and origin of this spirited celebration.
A Glimpse into the Past
The concept of a pub crawl is not new. Its origins can be traced back to the 19th century in England, where groups of friends would visit multiple pubs in a single night, enjoying drinks and camaraderie. Over the decades, this social activity spread across the world, evolving into various themed events, from holiday pub crawls to costume crawls. However, it wasn't until the late 20th century that the Pride Pub Crawl became a distinct and meaningful celebration within the LGBTQ+ community.
The Birth of the Pride Pub Crawl
The first Pride Pub Crawl is believed to have taken place in the early 1990s in San Francisco, a city renowned for its LGBTQ+ activism and vibrant nightlife. As part of the annual Pride festivities, organizers wanted to create an event that combined the celebratory spirit of Pride with the traditional pub crawl. The goal was to foster a sense of community, support local LGBTQ+ businesses, and provide a fun, inclusive space for people to come together and celebrate their identities.
The idea quickly gained traction, spreading to other cities known for their strong LGBTQ+ communities, such as New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Each city added its unique flair to the event, incorporating local bars, clubs, and entertainment venues. Over time, the Pride Pub Crawl became a staple of Pride Month celebrations, attracting participants from all walks of life.
Jim Thorpe Joins the Celebration
In 2023, Jim Thorpe, a picturesque town known for its rich history and welcoming community, hosted its first Pride Pub Crawl. The inaugural event was a resounding success, drawing locals and visitors alike to explore the town's charming pubs and bars while celebrating diversity and inclusion. The event featured live music with multiple participating venues around town, and a festive atmosphere that left participants eagerly anticipating the next year's crawl.
The 2nd Annual Jim Thorpe Pride Pub Crawl
This year, the Jim Thorpe Pride Pub Crawl promises to be even bigger and better. Set for Friday, June 21st, 2024, the event will kick off at 5:30 PM in the garden at Cafe Arielle at the Stabin Musuem which has been especially decorated this year and will feature $6 Pride Punch & Rainbow Fizz & Wine specials. We will continue from there for a pit stop at Marion Hose Bar at 6:30 PM before heading over to the Notch Eight Craft House at 6:45 PM. We'll enjoy some drink specials and laughs before heading to Wild Elder/Donerds Donuts for drinks and.. you guessed it, themed complimentary Donuts from Donerds Donuts at 7:15 PM.
We continue into the night, offering an array of entertainment and activities. Participants will have the opportunity to visit several other local establishments, (Ouros 7:45 to 8:15 PM, Broadway Grill 8:15 to 9 PM, Big Creek Vineyard 9:00 to 10:00) each offering unique drink specials, themed decorations, and live performances. We'll close the night out with bon-fire after gathering on the garden patio of the Craig Mansion from 10:00 to 11:00 PM.
Our goal is to create a safe, inclusive, and joyous celebration that highlights the town's commitment to equality and acceptance. The Pride Pub Crawl is not just about having fun; it's about coming together as a community to honor the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights and to support the ongoing struggle for equality.
Looking Ahead
As we prepare to celebrate the 2nd annual Jim Thorpe Pride Pub Crawl, it's important to remember the event's roots and the broader significance of Pride Month. The Pride Pub Crawl is a testament to the power of community, the importance of inclusivity, and the enduring spirit of celebration. It is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look forward to a future where everyone is free to love and be loved without fear or prejudice.
So, don your rainbow attire, gather your friends, and join us in Jim Thorpe on June 21st for a night of joy, laughter, and unity. Let's make this year's Pride Pub Crawl an unforgettable celebration of love, acceptance, and pride.
